Harbor Shores sites selling ahead of expectations

Half the home sites in Harbor Shores' cottage development -- 28 of 56 -- can now post sold signs.

At a time when the U.S. Commerce Department reports new home sales are down 12.4 percent, in Benton Harbor sales in Harbor Shores are bucking the trend.

As a result the second phase of the Hideaway development will be opened for development six months ahead of schedule. Hideaway features cottages on the Paw Paw River. Residents also will be within an easy walk to Lake Michigan, the river clubhouse, swimming pool and docks for kayaks and canoes.

"We are extremely pleased with the recent real estate sales success," said Mark Hesemann, Harbor Shores managing director.

Harbor Shores, a non-profit developer, is building the resort community and golf course as a catalyst to ongoing economic, environmental, and social revitalization efforts in Southwest Michigan.

The project, a public-private partnership, is the only one of its kind in the country.

Harbor Shores, a 530-acre master-planned resort, eventually will feature nearly 800 residential units, commercial space, marinas, a boutique hotel and spa as well as a wide array of resort and community amenities.

Harbor Shores is about 50 miles west of Kalamazoo and 100 miles east of Chicago. The development's central amenity is an 18-hole, public Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course with views of Lake Michigan.

At the end of September, the condominium phase of the development is expected to go on the market.

The condominiums and townhomes will have a 65-slip deep-water marina and commercial retail shops. It will go into the largest undeveloped stretch of land along the shores of Lake Michigan.
