For some people, one adventure of a lifetime is not enough, reports the Port Huron Times Herald. Loreen Niewenhuis of Battle Creek is following up a 1,000-mile walk around Lake Michigan in 2009 with a walk this year touching all five Great Lakes, a total of more than 1,100 miles. She said she’s a little footsore and blistered after walking more than 100 miles in 20 days.
"They’re getting better -- but that’s part of the journey," she said. She intends to walk most of the way around the mitten, then make forays to the Upper Peninsula to pick up Lake Superior and to the north shore of Lake Ontario in Canada.
Niewenhuis wrote a book, "A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach: One Woman’s Trek of the Perimeter of Lake Michigan," about her 2009 walk. After she finishes her current adventure, she plans another book, "A 1,000-Mile Great Lakes Walk."
