Feedback leads to upgrades at Portage Health

Patients and family who visit Portage Health's new operating room department in Hancock are going to be pleasantly surprised.

The hospital just put $70,000 into upgrading the perioperative service department, including a private family waiting room and patient cubicles with quiet new sliding glass doors that provide more privacy.

Waiting for a loved one to get out of surgery is tough; so the waiting room now includes new, comfortable furniture, with a pull-down bed if you're there all night; a 46-inch HD TV, and free coffee and water to keep you going while you wait.

"This was all done because of patient comments in the post-visit survey," says Nancy Archambeau, RN and perioperative services coordinator. "We take great pride in these improvements to our community's largest healthcare facility. Some of these families wait in here for several hours, and they're now able to do it in a private, comfortable setting. It's warm, inviting and a more comfortable place for these families who are going through a difficult time."

The improvements also include a separate private counseling area where doctors can meet one-on-one with families after a surgery, instead of announcing the good or bad news to the whole waiting room.
