Charter schools are nothing new for Upper Peninsula universities; they are located all over the state. But the latest one chartered by
Lake Superior State University is different.
It's a K-12, public, free, online school operated by a nonprofit. Called
iCademy, the school will open in August, with enrollment opening June 3. It was founded by local companies Innotec Group, Innovative Education Services and Inno-Versity, all of which are interested in moving digital and online learning forward for students.
The Michigan Department of Education recently approved the school's charter.
"We are thrilled to be approved for our new online charter school," says iCademy Board President Jerry Zandstra. "iCademy is at the forefront of the digital learning revolution. We are building a school that provides all children ready access to the latest digital technology and enables them to make meaningful connections with global schools far beyond our classroom."
iCademy has Michigan-certified teachers and will provide a flexible and customized learning environment for each student, including innovative and project-based curriculums, and a blended model of learning online and face-to-face. The first brick-and-mortar iCademy location is in the Holland and Zeeland area, at the Innocademy Charter School.
