Soo Film Festival awarded grant for new programming

What's happening: New grant funding is helping one of the Upper Peninsula’s more unique cultural experiences -- the Soo Film Festival. The $2,500 grant will offset 2023 programming, increasing the number of films shown at the event. 
Funding comes from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, which requires matching funds from the recipients.

What is the Soo Film Festival: Established in 2014, the Soo Film Festival has emerged as a favored destination for film enthusiasts across the region. While the festival's focus lies on Great Lakes films and filmmakers, it warmly welcomes entries from all around the globe. Operating as a non-profit, most of the initial work, like reviewing and selecting shows, is organized by non-partial committees.

What they're saying: “We are thrilled to receive this support from MACC,” said Jason Markstrom, President of Soo Film Festival said in a release. “This grant will allow us to continue to provide our community with high-quality film programming from around the Great Lakes.”

What's next: The film festival will take place this September, featuring 73 films. It will be the 10th annual festival and will feature a mix of narrative, documentary and animated entries.
