Portage Health joins Health Food Hospitals initiative

From auto repair to moving company? It's not as strange as it seems once you think about it.

That's the latest expansion in services from Trail Creek Motors on Station Drive in Calumet. Trail Creek opened up in 2006 as an auto repair shop handling a wide range of repairs on both foreign and domestic vehicles.

Owner Tony Abe says the shop has added services over the years based on customer demand. In 2008, the shop added full-service towing to its slate of offerings, and now has expanded that further to be a round-the-clock, heavy and light duty towing and recovering service.

The moving services? Well, they came about through the shop's associated U-Haul rental service, which was one original component of Abe's business. Now, that's called Trail Creek Movers and Transport, located on First Street in Laurium, and offers full-service moving, including packing, loading, transport, unloading and unpacking, as well as cleaning, cold storage and storage rental units.

"People who were renting our U-Hauls would ask if they could hire us to unload them, so that's how this all started," he says. "We definitely saw a need in the community for this service."

Abe says the addition of the Laurium movers and storage facility means the hiring of two more employees, and he is looking at possibly adding four more employees in the future, based on the new services.

And if there are more new developments to come, you can bet it's all in the name of serving Trail Creek customers.

"We focus highly on customer service," Abe says.
