If you were looking for an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, it probably doesn’t get much better than having a stint with an NFL team on your resume.
That’s where Dr. Christopher Peer joins Portage Health in Houghton from, including work with the Kansas City Chiefs NFL team during their training camps.
He’ll switch from football injuries to working with sports medicine patients at Portage Health, along with Dr. Jennifer Bow and Dr. Larry Carroll, who make up the orthopedic team there. The team handles regular care as well as emergency care.
Peer says his specialties lead him toward sports medicine, especially common injuries like those to shoulders and knees. He’ll start work here in September.
“I believe in caring for athletes at every level,” says Peer. “I specialize in shoulders and knees, but have experience in all types of sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures."
His background includes a medical degree from Georgetown University and orthopedic surgery training at the University of New Mexico, as well as an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship in Kansas City, where he was hired on with the Chiefs.
“Dr. Peer brings added expertise to our sports medicine institute as well as his experience in general orthopedics,” says Jim Bogan, president and CEO of Portage Health.
