There's no doubt that a whole slew of Yoopers, and Michigan hunters in general, are happy to hear the state predicting a good deer herd for hunting season.
Mlive.com recently did an article about archery-season predictions, and numbers are expected to be up statewide for both deer and bigger bucks.
Excerpt: "Last year's firearm season was kind of a slow season and there was a lot of standing corn," said Brent Rudolph, deer program leader for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment. "We expect some deer slipped through that would usually be taken, so that can translate to more bucks."
"Hunters should see a few more bucks, and they should be a little bit older, a little bit bigger."
Mild winter conditions and favorable spring weather likely led to better reproduction and higher deer numbers, particularly in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula, where recent harsh winters have taken a toll on the herd.
