Sale of Mackinac Island ferry company splits influential family

Selling the family business is never easy on anyone, but when it split a prominent family in the Mackinac Straits area, it caught the attention of the Detroit News.

Excerpt: Jim Brown had mixed feelings.

A third-generation owner of the Mackinac Island ferry service Arnold Transit Co., Brown wanted to keep the business in the family. But he could see that other members of his generation felt differently.

"It didn't mean as much to some of them," Brown said.

The family of Prentiss Brown Sr., who bought Arnold Transit in the mid-1920s, had debated for years whether to sell the island's longest-operating tourist and freight ferry service. This year, the debate came to a head, pitting one generation against another.
