Carl Behrend may be a familiar name to fans of folk music in the U.P., but he's now getting a wider audience with stories of the Great Lakes.
Excerpt: In the late '90s, Carl "Bearfoot" Behrend had never yet sung a song in front of a microphone. Less than 15 years later, the Upper Peninsula folk singer-songwriter has five CDs to his credit, selling 40,000 copies.
Plenty of struggling musicians would take that creative arc in a second.
"I'm the kind of person who ... I don't plan anything too much," Behrend said during a telephone interview this week. "All of a sudden it's there, and I write it down."
