If you've never heard of cyclocross, then you're not alone. The Europe-born sport is just taking root in the United States. That hasn't stopped a season from being formed here in the Upper Peninsula, however, and athletes and spectators alike turned out this past weekend to kick it off.
Excerpt: Unfortunately for riders, the weather was not ideal for this type of race, but the organizers say they like how the sport is growing.
"It started in Europe for the road bikers to keep in shape during the winter time," said Al Quaal course designer Danny Hill. "Today (Sunday) isn't typical cyclocross weather; usually it's raining and snowing and today's beautiful, but it makes for a much more spectator friendly atmosphere."
