While some areas in the U.P. are growing, the latest U.S. census figures show that overall, the region dropped 2 percent of its population in the last 10 years, with 13 of the U.P.'s 16 counties charting decreases in population.
Excerpt: The population of Michigan's Upper Peninsula has fallen 2 percent compared to 2000. The U.P. has 311,361 people, down from more than 317,000 a decade ago.
