826michigan opens downtown Ann Arbor store for robot enthusiasts

Kids with dreams of building their own AWESOM-O will get a chance to realize them once the new 826michigan store opens in downtown Ann Arbor.

The robot-supply-and-repair shop will open on May 17 at 115 E Liberty next to Main Street. The grand opening, between 7 and 10 p.m., will feature a robot dance off and robot-inspired puppet theater, among other things.

826's new shop will be stocked with robot-themed toys, novelties and unique gifts. It caries supplies for a number of different robots, ranging from Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots to Mega Mech, a 4-foot-tall inflatable robot.

826michigan is a non-profit dedicated to encouraging students in elementary, middle and high school to write more effectively. The organization is structured around the idea that great leaps in learning take place through one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

Like other 826 writing centers nationwide, 826michigan's retail operation serves the purpose of generating some earned revenue to support the organization's free writing programs for youth.

The Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair joins a number of similar stores in New York (Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company), Los Angeles (Echo Park Time Travel Mart) and Seattle (Greenwood Space Travel Supply Company). Pirates (San Francisco), spies (Chicago) and cryptozoologists (Boston) are also all part of the 826 community.
