About a block of old Ann Arbor is about to be cleared away to make room for more student housing on the southern edge of downtown.
The developer behind City Place development, currently before the city's Planning Commission, wants to demolish seven historic homes on South Fifth Avenue (just north of Blimpy Burger) to make room for two denser buildings. The houses were built between the mid 19th Century and early 20th Century. They currently serve as student housing.
In its place would go 24 rental units in two, 4-story buildings. The buildings would have 144 bedrooms and be accompanied by 36 surface parking spaces adjacent to the buildings.
The development still needs to be approved by the City Council before it can go forward.
