Ted Green didn't have high expectations for Vedit when he first created it in 1980. The then PhD student in computer science at the University of Michigan noticed there wasn't much in the way of text-editing software programs, so he created Vedit to fill the void.
"I thought that was a one-year project and I would go back to school," Green says. "It turned out there was much more demand for it than I thought."
That program, a universal text editor that can edit any file, led to the creation of GreenView Data and Green is its president. His company has now sold more than 150,000 copies of the Vedit software and has two employees working on it full-time. Green expects to add another employee or two within the next year.
Greenview has also spun-off start-ups like SpamStopsHere. That company, formed in 2002, is also growing fast and adding employees. But it was the unexpected and continued success of Vedit that enables Green to drive his company forward.
