Feds invests 32m in U-M crash-warning system

Uncle Sam may want you, but if you're a scientist in Ann Arbor he probably wants to pay you a nice chunk of change to do some research.

The feds recently announced it will invest $32 million to further a University of Michigan-based research project to develop an early-warning system for vehicle collisions.

The crash-warning system would alert drivers when they are about to leave the roadway, in danger of hitting another vehicle while changing lanes or are at risk of crashing into the vehicle ahead of them. The U-M Transportation Research Institute received Phase II funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation to continue testing the technology.

The first of the two phases of research involved designing and developing the system. The second phase will include field testing the system in vehicles both big and small over the next year.
