Entrepreneurship could boost Michigan's economy as concept of 'job security' fades

When the big companies aren't so big, little ones start to pop up to fill the vacuum

Let's call it the "risk gap."

First, we have the level of risk that you assume by taking a job at an established, major corporation. For decades in Michigan, if you took a job at the Big Three, you could essentially stay there for life. This, however, bred a risk-averse culture that is wary of entrepreneurialism - which remains one of our greatest obstacles in reshaping the economy.

Second, we have the level of risk you assume by accepting a job at an entrepreneurial company or starting a firm of your own.

It's safe to say that the gap between these two scenarios is shrinking. That is, fading job security at major, institutional corporations is causing some Michigan residents - particularly in Ann Arbor - to consider entrepreneurialism as a way of life.
