Tips for navigating traffic circles in Washtenaw County

Going round and round the roundabout is becoming a favorite past-time for commuters in Washtenaw County.

Excerpt:

The Washtenaw County Road Commission just opened its sixth traffic roundabout - at Geddes and Superior roads in Superior Township - the sixth it has built since 2002, with another in the planning for Ypsilanti Township.

Officials say the new style of circular intersection is safe and environmentally friendly, but some people find them confusing. Mark McCulloch, project engineer with the commission, discusses the issue with the News.

Q: Vehicles do not stop at modern roundabouts. Does that reduce pollution?
A:
Yes. Less time idling at an intersection means fewer pollutants emitted into the atmosphere and fewer fuel resources consumed. Also, landscaping the central island of a roundabout enhances the entrance points in a community.
