Getting to the center of downtown Northville will become more convenient this summer after a pedestrian walk-thru is completed.
Construction on the Comerica Community Connection -- named for the bank's donation of the building that's being transformed into a pedestrian passage between the city's busiest parking lot and the center of downtown -- began in January.
It should finish within six months, says Lori Ward, director of the
Northville Downtown Development Authority.
When it's done, visitors, employees and residents can avoid cutting through shops or walking around the block to get to the businesses around the square in the city center -- never ideal in snowy weather.
The sheltered walk-thru is located between the lot and the backs of businesses along Main Street. It is going into a two-story building which will have the second floor removed to open up to a clear atrium style ceiling. The length of the walk is about 65 feet and it empties into the city center, bringing customers in to area businesses more quickly and safely.
"We've been talking about creating a connection or cut-through from the most utilized parking lot in downtown," Ward says, "and we had a willing partner to work with us in Comerica."
