85 years ago a Kowalski owned this building. It was a corner shop. It sold Life Buoy soap, meat, sausage, and a slew of other supplies for a family back then. The back part of the building served as a soda fountain and candy shop for the kids of Hamtramck. And for decades that's what this place did, sold general store items and soda and candy. Now, well, it still serves Hamtramck but in a different Capacity. It sells coffee. Renovated by another grandson Sean Kowalski after the general store slipped out of sight and sat vacant for years and years, Cafe 1923, as the building is called now, slings caffeine drinks and sandwiches to local artists, writers, city officials, and anyone looking for a pick me up and a nice place to sit and talk.
