Three Midland firefighters grabbed the Internet spotlight, the attention of CNN, other fire departments nationwide, and some viewers as far away as Asia when they decided to make a ho-hum public service announcement about fireworks safety into a catchy rap song.
Midland firefighters Mark Laux, Roger Bebeau, and Steve Makowski wanted their message to get out there in time for the Fourth of July holiday and Fireworks Safety Month in June. So they posted the two-minute, 46-second rap song on YouTube. At last count, the
video had more than 22,000 hits.

The idea for a rap video was one the group felt would appeal to their target audience of preteens and teenagers. Although all of the media attention has been exciting, they really relish the fact kids are quoting the 2-minute, 45-second video.
The production was "about as low-budget as you can get," according to the trio, with their contributions being a foot of duct tape, two AA batteries and some aluminum foil.
