Bay City Western diver earns All-American honors

After a recurring elbow injury three years ago, Erin Bridgewater had to end her gymnastics career. So she took up diving instead.

Turns out, that was a good decision. The Bay City Western student recently was named an All-American for the 2010 swimming and diving season. It's a distinction that only one in 100 earn throughout the United States. She'll also be diving for the University of Michigan on a scholarship.

Excerpt:

"I never expected anything like this," she said. "My friends talked me into it. I just picked it up for fun. It's still surprising that it's turned into what it has."

Bridgewater dominated her senior season at Western, capturing Tri-Cities, Saginaw Valley League and regional championships while finishing first in every dual meet. She finished fourth in the state in her final high school meet.

In order to be named an All-American, a diver must have at least 11 dives scored at 370 points or better. From there, the diver must then submit one or two videos to the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. A panel of judges then reviews the videos and selects the top 100 for All-American honors.
