Head of Midland-based think tank weighs in on U.S. unemployment issue

Three years ago, the government estimated that about 1.1 million people nationwide had been out of work for more than six months. As of May, that number had climbed to 6.7 million.

This means that in a little more than three years, the percentage of people out of work for longer than six months has climbed from 17 percent to 46 percent.

A Midland expert weighs in on the state's unemployment issue.

Paul Kersey, director of labor policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a Midland-based free-market think tank, urged tax and regulatory changes to make Michigan a more business-friendly state.

"At this point, there is little we can do to help the long-term unemployed except to rework this state so that it is a magnet for employers and the kind of place where jobs are relatively easy to find," he said.
