A family-owned Bay County pickle business that operated for more than half a century will find new life under Kaiser Pickles.
The Matthews Pickle Company, which operated in Mount Forest Township for more than 50 years, recently was bought by
Kaiser Pickles of Cincinnati. The family-owned pickle company employed about 35 seasonal workers and generated about 15 million pounds of pickles every year.
Excerpt:
The company was owned by Lynnea Matthews, who stepped in to head the operation following the death of her husband, Daniel.
"Kaiser had found out that Dan had cancer and they had approached us," said Lynnea Matthews, 58, who has worked full time for the pickle company since her marriage in 1996. "We were going to sell it and Kaisers were very interested and we just proceeded with the deal."
Kaiser was a customer of Matthews Pickle. It collects pickles from area growers and processes them for distribution, according to Lynnea Matthews, who still remembers the first time she worked with her late husband at the pickle company.
