Mid-Michigan college students among those to lose Bridge Cards

The Michigan Department of Human Services is cracking down on food assistance to college students, many of whom qualify for state Bridge Cards under previous rules. The changes will mean stricter guidelines for food assistance and likely will mean less Bridge cards handed out to mid-Michigan students.

Excerpt: Melissa Oliver is a senior at Saginaw Valley State University, and she's also one of an estimated 20,000 Michigan college students who may lose eligibility for a taxpayer-paid food assistance program this year.

"I guess it makes sense, but I don't think it's extremely fair because some people don't get help from their parents and they need it," said Oliver, 24.

The Michigan Department of Human Services announced this month that college students no longer will be eligible for the state's Food Assistance Program unless they meet federal guidelines.
