Job openings. That's a pair of words that many people are thrilled to see in the media today. The Detroit News recently used them when discussing Midland and Dow Chemical company. Thanks to a new development, Dow is hiring, the newspaper said.
Excerpt: Dow Chemical Co. said today it will begin hiring 100 workers to develop solar shingles at its Midland plant -- perhaps as early as the end of this month.
The Midland-based chemical giant received federal funds and state tax credits to produce its Dow Powerhouse solar shingles, which can be installed on residential roofs to cut utility bills and energy consumption. The jobs will help make Michigan a national "green tech" hub, said Dow Solar general manager Jane Palmieri.
The venture is expected to bring more than 1,200 jobs to the region by 2014. The starting salary for the 100 jobs is $14.35 per hour plus benefits.
