Star of the West milling company still going strong after 141 years

Star of the West flour is a familiar shelf staple in Michigan pantries, but it may not be as well known for its long history and alternative products, like whole wheat or beans. The more-than-century-old company has managed to keep growing through the lean years felt by much of the state, too.

Excerpt: Producing flour might be what 141-year-old Star of the West Milling Co. is known for, but there's a lot more than wheat rolling through the Frankenmuth-based business.

During the past three years, the company at 121 E. Tuscola has invested more than $8.4 million in new equipment and building additions to increase production and ramp up sales to $325 million in 2010, according to company data.
