Star of the West flour is a familiar shelf staple in Michigan pantries, but it may not be as well known for its long history and alternative products, like whole wheat or beans. The more-than-century-old company has managed to keep growing through the lean years felt by much of the state, too.

During the past three years, the company at 121 E. Tuscola has invested more than $8.4 million in new equipment and building additions to increase production and ramp up sales to $325 million in 2010, according to company data.
