Kellogg Comunity College picks new president

Dr. Dennis Bona has been named acting President of Kellogg Community College.

Bona has served as KCC's Interim President since the retirement of Dr. Edward Haring on June 30.

Bona says it is "both an honor and a privilege to serve the students, staff and the citizens of our community as the President of Kellogg Community College."

In public interviews prior to his appointment, Bona said he wants to help more people in the community view college as a realistic option. He also acknowledged that due to the state's fiscal climate one of his challenges will be using the college's financial resources well.

A contract through June 30, 2010 is being drawn up and will be presented at the Oct 20 meeting of the KCC board of trustees. The board voted unanimously to offer the position to Bona.

Bona formerly was Vice President for Instruction KCC. Prior to that, he held various positions at KCC, including Dean of Career and Occupational Education, Director of the Regional Manufacturing and Technology Center, Director of Trades and Technology, and Instructional Manager of Industrial Welding.

He helped develop systems for evaluating faculty performance and student learning, helped create a joint-admissions agreement with Western Michigan University and worked to expand the nursing program.

He has also worked as an adjunct faculty member at Michigan State University and Western Michigan University, as a professional consultant, a grant writer, and a presenter/speaker.

Bona received an Associate of Arts and Sciences in Welding Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Trade and Technical Education from Ferris State University, and a Master's and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University.

Kellogg Community College has sites in Battle Creek, Albion, Coldwater, Hastings, and Fort Custer Industrial Park. It offers nearly 100 pre-professional college and university transfer curricula, approximately 40 occupational associate degree programs aimed toward job preparation, and related training for apprenticeships.
