The big event: The Battle Creek Cereal Festival

This year's Battle Creek Cereal Festival is about more than Snap, Crackle and Pop -- though they will have their place.

The festival gets under way Friday, June 11 with an evening parade. Floats, groups, businesses, walking units, decorated bikes, strollers and children dressed as their favorite cereal character will step off at 6 p.m.

Learning a bit of the city's history will be a part of the World's Longest Breakfast Table, the Saturday morning highlight of the festival. Plans are for 153 tables representing each year Battle Creek has been a city, from 1859 to 2011. A sign posted on each table will have a year and historical facts from that year.

Breakfast will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. on the west end of Michigan Avenue between Washington Avenue and Tompkins Street.

Throughout the rest of the day there will be concerts, activities to promote healthy lifestyles and events that will encourage people to provide food for the Food Bank.

In keeping with the all in good health theme, the Cereal City Classic -- with a 5K, 10K and 5K Fun Walk -- begins at 8:15 a.m.

The city's sports teams will turn out for the fun. Battle Creek Blaze indoor football will offer "Skillz and Drillz." There also will be events sponsored by Battle Creek Bombers Baseball, Battle Creek Knights Basketball and the Battle Creek Revolution Ice Hockey Historical Displays including Heritage Battle Creek.

Sojourner Truth Institute and Adventist Village displays will offer participants another way to further explore the city's heritage.
