Davenport University is helping the unemployed prepare for new careers by offering them reduced tuition.
The Grand Rapids-based institution that has a campus in Kalamazoo will continue to offer 25 percent tuition discounts for Michigan's unemployed under a program previously funded through Michigan Works that ended when federal funding to the state dropped by nearly 40 percent earlier this year.
Larry Polselli, Ed.D., executive vice president for enrollment and student development, says considering the economic challenges many in Michigan face,
Davenport University decided to step forward and provide support to the local communities by offering the discount when the Michigan Works retraining program and funding was eliminated.
"Davenport University is uniquely positioned to help students by extending this tuition discount when people need it most," Polsell says.
The discount is offered to any current student who can show documentation of current unemployment or underemployment. An unemployment letter, paycheck stub, is the kind of documentation needed.
The discount will be applied for the entire financial aid year that it is awarded.
It is not retroactive and may not be combined with other tuition or scholarship offers.
Davenport University is a Michigan based private university specializing in business, information technology and health professions. It has an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students at its W. A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids, 13 campuses throughout Michigan and online.
