Contemporary downtown apartments found at Lovell Square

Sean Berner is convinced he could not have picked a better place to live than Lovell Square Apartments, a recently redeveloped property in downtown Kalamazoo.

"For me, it was all about the location," says Berner, executive vice president of Zooropa Design. Berner likes that the apartments located on the corner of West Lovell Street and Westnedge Avenue are within walking distance of all his favorite attractions, and that he is not living the middle of the main strip downtown. He says he also liked that the development has a secured, gated parking lot with covered spots.

"I think the most exciting part for me is the whole place is brand new with an upscale style from top to bottom," Berner says.

Lovell Square was once a long-vacant senior center known as The Merrill Residence. The original 87 rooms have been converted to 37 one-bedroom, one bathroom apartments, with modern finishes and contemporary style. Granite countertops, bamboo floors, open kitchens with stainless-look appliances, and washer and dryer in the units are some of the amenities.

What was once barber shop and craft center have been reconstructed to create a fully equipped workout room, as well as additional storage accessible to all occupants. The apartments give access to a large private outdoor area, complete with landscaping, ample seating, and four grills for residents' use.

With downtown apartment occupancy at nearly 100 percent, it made sense for Jaqua Realtors to take on the project that they say they expect to bring a greater sense of community to the neighborhood.

"We get asked about downtown housing from all of our corporate clients," says Dan Jaqua, owner of Jaqua Realtors. "Lovell Square is exactly what Kalamazoo needs."
