Perrigo has gotten the go ahead to proceed with a 50,000-square-foot building on Eastern Avenue in Allegan. The building is in the design phase and its cost is not yet known.
The company is the world's largest manufacturer of over-the-counter pharmaceutical products for the store brand market. The new building will be across the street from the company's corporate headquarters.
Perrigo says it considered expanding its offices in New York and New Jersey, but a number of tax breaks convinced the company to stay in Michigan.
Perrigo, which in undergoing consistent growth, has planned for a number of years to expand its presence in Allegan. Ultimately, the new site is expected to give the company space to hire 400 new people between 2008 and 2013. In December 2011, the company updated a website with 100 new jobs and indicated it was looking for people to fill them.
And last year, Perrigo Co. was named to Fortune magazine's Top 100 fastest growing companies in the United States. Fortune ranks companies by growth over the last three years. The generic drug company came in at No. 55 in its debut on the magazine's list.
Perrigo posted annual revenue growth of 17 percent over the past three years.
The company is a leading global health care supplier. It develops, manufactures and distributes over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals, nutritional products, active pharmaceutical ingredients and consumer products.
