What is the price farmers pay for an organic label?

Some farmers in Southwest Michigan say getting federal certification that their crops are organic costs too much and takes too much time, reports WMUK (102.1 FM).

Organic produce costs more than regular produce because certification and organic standards require paperwork and planning and that means fewer farmers are promoting organic produce at the local farmers market even though they still grow it.

(Farmer) Sandra McNeese says no one issue led her to give up her farm’s organic certification. She says the fact that some growers claim to be organic without being certified undermines the process, and accountability.
