A recent Environmental Protection Agency grant will help conservationists fight invasive species growing in wetlands in Southwest Michigan. During the effort, the conservation team will use controlled fires to eliminate the nonnative species.

The $196,000 grant will fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a project to restore ecological harmony to a 1,500-acre parcel of land collectively owned and managed by the Kalamazoo Nature Center, Fort Custer Training Center, Hart's Lake Calhoun County Conservation District, the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy and the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute.
"This is an exciting effort," said Michelle Skedgell, executive director at the Pierce Creek Institute. "There is a lot of property that is going to be affected, a lot of species."
