Battle Creek woman walks around Lake Michigan

Battle Creek's Loreen Niewenhuis set off from Navy Pier in Chicago and walked the full circumference of Lake Michigan.

Her book is now out about the 1,019-mile-trek that took her 64 days, spread out over a period of seven months, at an average rate of 16 miles per day, reports the Grand Traverse Insider. Niewenhuis is visiting area book stores to promote "A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach: One Woman's Trek of the Perimeter of Lake Michigan" (Crickhollow Books).

Excerpt:

"A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach" details the triumphs and challenges of the trek, including the difficulties of hiking on sand, over rolling dunes and on the rocky shores of the Upper Peninsula. It also explores the natural and human history of Lake Michigan, from the urban blight of South Chicago to the majesty of the Sleeping Bear Dunes and the wild, isolated places that few ever have a chance to see.
