Finnish culture celebrated

If you know anything about the Upper Peninsula, then you know a ton of the heritage around these parts is thanks to the Finnish culture. That's why celebrating the Finish Independence Day has been such an important event in Hancock that they haven't missed it for the past 93 years--the longest running celebration of that day outside of Finland.

Excerpt: Music, dancing and ritual came together in Finlandia University's celebration of Finnish Independence Day in Hancock.

The event, the 93rd annual, took place in the Finnish-American Heritage Center Sunday.

"Many of our ancestors came through here, including mine," Hancock Mayor Bill Laitila said. "It's a very special event."
