42 North aims to provide affordable rental alternative to Ann Arbor students

Dense, urban-style development is all the rage in Ann Arbor right now, but one developer is betting students will want a little variety in their housing options.

While proponents of building vertically in Ann Arbor are trying to win a victory with the 601 Forest development, those who back the suburban-style horizontal development are going for their own victory with the 42 North project.

They'll just have to wait a little bit longer as City Council postponed a decision on the development Monday night until Sept. 8.

The development on the city's western edge is the typical suburban-style development consisting of a cluster of 3-story apartment buildings surrounded by lots of surface parking. Throw in a recreation center in an area dominated by sub divisions, strip malls and car-centric culture between Maple Road and I-94.

And that's just what the developer, Wood Partners, wants.
