Downtown Royal Oak Apartment Building renovation nearly finished

Not all of the new housing being developed in downtown Royal Oak is pricy condos and lofts for sale. Urbane Apts is in the final stages of renovating the 310 W. Sixth Street apartment building into new rental apartments and retail space.

The four-story Depression-era building at the corner of Sixth and Washington streets on downtown's west side has been transformed into a 39-unit apartment building. The apartments are either studios of one-bedrooms with amenities such as hardwood floors and wireless Internet access. Rental rates range from $955 to $1,395 a month, although all of the units have been leased.

The renovation began in the spring of last year and is largely finished. Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on the exterior restoration and will soon begin refurbishing the ground floor retail space, which will house the Urbane Apts offices. That work is expected to wrap up this fall.
