Sterling Heights-built RAM 1500 wins at Auto Show

The new 2019 Ram 1500 pick-up truck has been named the 2019 North American Truck of the Year at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

The Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) light-duty truck is manufactured in Sterling Heights at 38111 Van Dyke, where the company invested $1.48 billion in 2016 to retool the facility to support the future growth of the Ram brand. The investment created an estimated 700 new jobs to support production of the truck, which officially launched in March 2018.

The 2019 Ram 1500 triumphed over General Motors' Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra to win at the Detroit auto show and the award is considered one of the world’s most prestigious, based on its diverse mix of 60 automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada who serve as the judging panel.

“The Ram 1500 is an important product for FCA and winning this award is one of the highest honors,” says Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand.

But Bigland says it isn’t just the designers who deserve credit for the win.

“Of course, a special recognition for all the hard-working men and women at FCA that really brought this vehicle aboutfrom our engineers to our designers to, of course, the people who are actually building this machine on the shop floor.”

Jurors cited the truck’s ride quality, mild-hybrid technology, interior design, and touchscreen technology among their top reasons for selecting FCA’s Ram 1500 over other competitors.
