Kid-safe networking site launched by Royal Oak entrepreneur

As the mother of three, Clarkston resident Jen Kolean knows that the Internet isn't always a safe place for kids. That's why she recently launched Boomvote, a networking site geared toward kids 13 and up.

"I thought, I'd love to provide kind of like a safe place, where you can connect with your friends, but not have people know your e-mail address, not know your real name," Kolean says.

Boomvote.com launched in September, but it's been what Kolean calls a slow launch, similar to a restaurant's "soft opening." WIth a handful of months' experience under her belt, and about 200 registered users, Kolean says ready to start a membership push.

In addition to parent-friendly safety precautions, Kolean's Boomvote also offers kid-friendly entertainment options, like the "question of the week," a feature that promotes discussion and offers users the chance to earn cash prizes for participating. (This week's question: "What are the best and worst movies you saw in 2007?")

"People seem to really enjoy it," she says. "Now we just have to get the word out there."
