Michigan LED Association doubles membership

Several signs point to the imminent growth of the LED light industry both nationally and in Metro Detroit. The latest? The Michigan Solid-State Lighting Association has doubled its membership.

The six-month-old advocacy group started with less than 10 members. Today, business membership has doubled and it expects to keep growing as the LED light industry continues to fill the energy-efficient lighting void.

"The forecast for growth in the solid-state lighting (LED light) industry is exponential in the next three years," says Dave Simon, president of the Michigan Solid-State Lighting Association.

Lumecon, an LED light manufacturer, and CoreLED Systems, an LED systems designer, have recently joined. The association started off as a combination of businesses, universities, (University of Michigan and Wayne State University) and utilities (DTE Energy).

Another sign of the industry's emergence is the fast fall in product prices for both commercial (streetlights) and residential uses. This is becoming possible as orders continue to increase, producing more economies of scale and other efficiencies that come with greater production.

"There is a double positive coming," Simon says. "We think the pricing of LEDs can come down substantially, some 60 percent or so."
