This week, the
Michigan Economic Development Corporation made Economic Development Job Training grants to 11 companies across the state. A total of $791,680 will be used to upgrade the skills of 1,525 workers, including 469 new hires.
Great news for the entire state.
Locally, PGK Engineering in Troy will receive $40,000 for its 50 current employees. The company will partner with Oakland Community College for the training, which will be in advanced manufacturing applications.
"Michigan has the best workers in the world and these job training grants will keep our workers and our businesses competitive," said Governor Jennifer Granholm in a statement. "Investing in worker training is helping us create good-paying, cutting-edge Michigan jobs." In her 2007 State of the State address, she emphasized the
need to strengthen Michigan's workforce in order to enhance Michigan's business-friendly
climate.
Job training is just one tool that MEDC is employing to do just that. The organization, which was formed in 1999 as a partnership between the state and local communities, works to promote economic growth in Michigan. Acting as a corporation, not a bureaucracy, MEDC connects state and local resources -- like tax abatements --
and services -- like marketing -- with the needs of businesses.
