Susan Kruger never did well with studying in grade and high schools. The idea of upping her academic game in college to graduate was pretty intimidating.
"I heard that it would take 3-4 hours longer to study for a test in college than it took in high school," Kruger, president of SOAR Learning, says. "I just knew that would be impossible for me."
She desperately sought to streamline her study habits and quickly discovered there were far easier ways to prepare for tests and learn material. That led to a 3.96 GPA her first semester and a start in a career of helping people master study and learning skills.
Kruger started
SOAR Learning in 1996 and now sells study curriculums to schools across the country. She has 800 clients today and expects to cross the 1,000 mark within the next six month. This has allowed her to make two hires over the last year, expanding the staff of her Lake Orion-based business to four people. She hopes to hire a few more in the next year.
Kruger hopes her company's products will help students learn more about learning. To her, more time needs to be spent on that.
"My mission is to be an advocate for study skills," says Kruger. "It's very frustrating for me that the K-12 curriculum focuses on content instead of learning and comprehension skills."
