Communities sign on to program geared at repairing blighted homes

It sounds like an urban legend - buy a house for a dollar and fix it up. But there's no trick here. The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development is offering a national program designed to attack blight by fixing decrepit houses.

The project is part of a federal program aimed at helping communities curb blight and promote home ownership by allowing local governments to purchase HUD homes for $1 under HUD's Good Neighbor Program... So far, only Dearborn and Taylor have signed on, but the program is drawing interest from other Metro Detroit communities, including Southgate, River Rouge, Madison Heights, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Grand Rapids, Flint and Detroit. In Taylor, it's been so popular that the city has temporarily stopped taking calls.
