Even in an economic downtown people want to go to the zoo to see the monkeys and the polar bears and the sea lions, even here in Detroit. For the third year in a row attendance at the Detroit Zoo is up, with over a million people coming in 2008.

The Detroit Zoo saw a slight increase in attendance in 2008, passing
the 1 million mark for the third consecutive year, a zoo official said.
The officials said 1,114,221 people visited the zoo in 2008.
There were 1,090, 544 visitors the previous year. In 2006, 1,001,737
people came to the zoo.
