Southfield sound studio expands in anticipation of Michigan's film boom

Here's one more story of how the film industry has affected something that calls Michigan home. This time it's a sound studio in Southfield. And it's expanding 20,000 square-feet in anticipation of incoming film projects.

"We want to be at the forefront of new media," said Rose, 63, who runs the business with his son and vice president, Chris Rose, 34; Chad Cooper, 35; and a team of 70 employees, some who have been with the company since it opened in the same Southfield strip mall back in 1976.

The expansion will be complete in January.

Over the years Renee Zellweger, Jeff Daniels, Aretha Franklin, George Lucas, J.P. McCarthy, Vincent Price and Tim Allen have recorded voice tracks, commercials and other audio components at the studio. Business for the new studios is promising: The Michigan Film Office cites nine films coming soon to Michigan and another nine in production.

"The added space will be a very cool, creative environment, very dynamic and fun to work," says Arik Green of Ferndale, the interior designer whose aim is to create a hip, comfortable space where clients can work up to 24 hours a day to finish projects.
