The first phase of a $42 million development that could erase one of the last blighted blocks of Woodward Avenue in Detroit's Midtown area continues on its path to becoming reality.

Detroit's Brownfield Development Authority board Thursday recommended for City Council approval an expanded plan to convert the 3900 block of Woodward, between West Alexandrine and Selden, into a 302-space parking garage, more than 50,000 square feet of office and commercial space, 47 apartments, as well as the renovation of a historic theater whose last incarnation was as an X-rated movie house.

The project, named the Woodward Garden Block Development, needs additional city and state approval for a six-story, mixed-use building that was added to the original plan. Additional tax credits are being sought, too.

The project is seeking tenants, said project developer, George Stewart.

"We keep moving forward, that's the main thing. It's not over yet, but we are moving in the right direction," he said.
