Exec wants fairgrounds to be park

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and other metro Detroit leaders and residents told the Huron-Clinton Metroparks board Thursday that they want to see the state fairgrounds at 8 Mile and Woodward turned into an urban park.

The Metroparks board is considering leasing the fairgrounds from the state for $1 a year, developing it into a year-round park at a cost estimated between $15 million and $50 million. Most look at the plan as the best chance to save the state fair -- the oldest in the U.S. -- after Gov. Jennifer Granholm cut funding for the event during budget planning last year.

"As the largest county in the state of Michigan, serving 2 million citizens, I strongly recommend the proposed project, which would bring a Metropark to the people instead of creating another park away from the population," Ficano told the park board at their monthly meeting Tuesday at Kensington Metropark in Brighton.
