Wayne County officials say the first phase of renovations to the iconic Guardian Building will be 95 percent complete this year.

During a Tuesday tour of the downtown building that is set to house most of the county's operations, officials said the project will save $4 million in facilities costs, despite coming in over budget.

Deputy Executive Azzam Elder described the project as a "no-brainer."

"When you look at what happened last year with people over-leveraging, this is the type of action you want government to take," Elder said. "This is a great move for county taxpayers and is what people are looking and asking for."
