Preservation Wayne has friends beyond Detroit

Preservation Wayne, an organization that strives to preserve and protect Detroit's neighborhoods and buildings, has support beyond Detroit city limits.

Tiger Stadium in Detroit may be long gone, but members of Preservation Wayne believe in saving the city's other historic buildings. They have a lot of allies from Detroit's suburbs.

"Oh, definitely," said Karen Nagher, executive director of Preservation Wayne. "More than 50 percent of them are (suburban dwellers). The memories, for one thing."

Founded in 1975, Preservation Wayne's mission is to preserve, promote and protect neighborhoods and buildings that define Detroit's character. The group began as a campus organization at Wayne State University, and has been an independent corporation since 1988.

Redford resident Nagher noted suburban dwellers often grew up in the city, or their parents did. "The architecture's definitely part of it." The Saturday morning and Tuesday evening tours draw well, including some folks in their 50s who may move back downtown.
